i love books!!

Today wasn't an easy day. Don't know what made it hard, really. It was just one of those days when the kids pushed about everything. They fought me, they fought each other. I was ready for a break.

I was cleaning up after supper (by myself, kids were downstairs playing) and I came into the living room to see this

Other than the ugly furniture and carpet- there is magic in this picture. To me, this was a place where a child, or children had sat, surrounded by books. Reading, and reading. I have a great love of books and  I love that my kids love books! I did not sit my child on the couch and surround them with books and tell them to 'read'- they chose to do that on their own. They have grown to enjoy looking at books and learning to read. This makes me so happy!

I am going to share just a few quotes about reading...

"It's not the toys in the house that make the difference in children's lives; it's the words in their heads. The least expensive thing we can give a child outside of a hug turns out to be the most valuable: words." Jim Trelease - from Why read aloud? the read- aloud handbook

"Children are made readers on the laps of their parents."
— Emilie Buchwald

"Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read."
— Marilyn Jager Adams

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go."
— Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!"

"There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island."
— Walt Disney

A great book that I think every parent should own is "Honey for a Child's Heart" by Gladys Hunt. It is a guide to help you understand how amazing books can be for children and it includes book lists to help you find those good books to read to your kids. It is an amazing tool to take to the library to help you find those hidden jewels!

The Usborne books catalogue is also an  excellent resource for finding books to read to your children :) What!!?! Shameless plug, sorry... I had to. Laugh with me.
